1980/1 Carrera GT
This car I have to say is probably my favourite of all Porsche. The car was designed for the 1980 Le Mans 24 hours race where it placed 6th. It had a limited production run of so it could qualify in the production class. It was the first production car to use full electronic ignition acting impart with boost pressure, and glass reinforced polycarbonate wings, later used on the 944s front valance.
Later on in May 1981 a further evolution of the GT was brought out although not designated as a 937 but as a 931. This became the 924 Carrera GTS, 4 versions were available Standard 245bhp, Club Sport 270bhp cage and lightened, Rally 280bhp, and the GTRace with 375bhp slicks huge track and unique intake and injection system.
Only 406* Carrera GT's were made (including prototypes) Most were LHD with only 75 RHD cars being built for the British market. One thing that strikes me as odd is the disparity that in the 0-60 times taken by various magazines. Porsche quoted 6.9secs, a time reached in the standard 924 turbo by Autocar in 1980, Road and Track did one savage run where it reached 60 in 5.4secs (as fast as the then current 911 turbo). This disparity can be explained by the somewhat ponderous Getrag gearbox with it's long dogleg 1-2 change. A trait that took me 3 months to get used too.
Overall the best drivers car of the front engined Porsches bar possibly the 968 Turbo.
